Move over Joss Whedon, there’s a new set of stars taking over the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s long been rumored, but it looks like it is now official; the next installment of The Avengers storyline has been placed in the hands of Joe and Anthony Russo. The dynamic duo are responsible for last year’s stellar Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are set to go into production in April on next summer’s Captain America: Civil War. They will take over directing duties on Marvel’s Avengers property from Joss Whedon, who helmed the first two films with the second, Avengers: Age of Ultron set to arrive in theaters on May 1st. Whedon previously hinted that he would not return to direct the next installment in order to focus on creating original content. Production on the two part Avengers sequel titled “Infinity War” will begin next year after Civil War is wrapped, which currently has a May 6th, 2016 release. According to sources, the two part Avengers: Infinity War will be shot back-to-back with the film expected to be the biggest Marvel movie to date and feature the entire MCU line-up taking on the powerful Thanos, who was teased at the end of the first Avengers and was featured in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Actor Josh Brolin has already been cast in the role. It’s unclear how the Russo’s shooting back-to-back Marvel movies will affect their recently signed three-year first-look deal with Sony Pictures as their schedule will be filled until at least May 2019 when Infinity War Part 2 is set to arrive in theaters.
