The Smashing Pumpkins - “1979” and “Perfect” (Music Videos)

The Smashing Pumpkins - “1979” and “Perfect” (Music Videos) The music video for "1979" was directed by the husband-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris directed the 2006 comedy-drama road film Little Miss Sunshine and their 1996 silent film inspired video for The Smashing Pumpkins’ "Tonight Tonight" (starring Tom Kenny and Jill Talley) won six MTV Video Music Awards)

The video follows a day in the life of rebellious suburban teens driving around in a Dodge Charger automobile. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan appearing all through the music video in the backseat of a car. The other band members had brief parts in the music video. James Iha (lead guitar) appears as a convenience store clerk, D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar) as an irritated neighbor, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin as a cop, and all four members of Smashing Pumpkins appear together as the band in the party scene.

Billy Corgan wanted to capture the feeling of being bored in the Chicago bedroom community, where Corgan grew up.

The music video for the 1998 song "Perfect" is a companion piece to the earlier video “1979” and involves the same characters who are now older.
